Paul was born in England and migrated to Australia with his parents in 1970. The family settling in what was than a small country town of Werribee on the outskirts of Melbourne and His father taking up post with the “RAAF” central band as a musician. After a brief time attending Werribee high school Paul found work as a general hand and fruit picker on local farms than gaining full time employment at the Werribee post office as a postman. At this time he also became involved with amateur theatre and making 8mm short films. This was the beginning of his passion for the film medium. With his interest in film Paul began the search to find study as a special effects make up artist in motion pictures. Paul began his training in makeup at the Australian Broadcasting Commission at Ripponlea Melbourne. Commencing work on the a.b.c Pop Show “Countdown” and being responsible for makeup design on music celebrities; Dolly Parton, the B52s, Adam and the Ants, Annie Lennox, Elton John, Billy Idol, Kim Wilde,David Bowie and more.as well as Variety performances etc. Upon completing 3 years at the a.b.c. Paul went onto further his careerto become a freelance make up designer in the film industry. Films and mini series were to follow, both in Australia and abroad, Australian films such as; The Man from Snowy River 2 “(Sigrid Thornton) “Kangaroo” (Judy Davis)“Dead Heart” (Bryan Brown) “Spotswood” (Anthony Hopkins) “Praise” (Sasha Horler)“Doing time for Patsy Cline” (Miranda Otto, Richard Roxborough) And also on international projects in locations around the world; From jungles in Borneo with John Milius directing “Farewell to the King (Nick Nolte), Easter Island for Kevin Costner’s “Rapa Nui”, Toronto, Africa, Thailand with Angelina Jolie on “Beyond Borders” ,in Budapest and Porto Rico with Chris Odonnell and Micheal Keaton on Ridley Scott’s” The Company” John Woo’s” Mission Impossible” (Tom Cruise) Thru reputation Paul was commissioned For Mel Gibson’s epic adventure “BRAVE HEART” Initial design concepts took place at Shepparton studios in London in collaboration with Mr. Gibson. Filming followed in breathtaking locations throughout Scotland, Ireland and England. The film receiving critical acclaim and 6 Academy Awards. The Oscar presented to Paul for best makeup and hair in feature film. Of recent years Paul’s talent has been further rewarded by his piers with a Bafta nomination ,two separate nominations for the Emmy and Australian makeup Awards. After completing filming in Europe of the 16th century adventure” Solomon Kane” (with Pete Postlethwaite and James Purefoy) Paul returned to Australian cinema with the film Waiting City shot in Kolkata , India and than to Melbourne to be close to his family and children.. When not on location Paul resides at his home on the Greek island of Kalymnos. |
